BC gets defensive in victory

After getting blasted by Northeastern in the first round of the Beanpot last Monday night, Boston College knew it needed to tighten up on defense.

In beating the University of Massachusetts, 2-0, last night at Conte Forum, the No. 12 Eagles did just that, showing off their mettle on the defensive end.

Benn Ferriero scored at 2:15 of the first period, Brock Bradford added an empty-net goal, and John Muse made 21 saves to shut out the Minutemen for the second time this season to lead the Eagles (12-9-4, 8-7-4 Hockey East).

Paul Dainton made 22 saves for UMass (11-13-3, 6-9-3).

Yale 5, Harvard 1 - Mike Matczak scored twice and the No. 14 Bulldogs hit on four of six power-play opportunities to dominate the visiting Crimson.

Coming off a near upset of No. 1 Boston University last Monday in the opening round of the Beanpot, Harvard fell flat against Yale, getting outshot, 50-15.

Harvard's Matt McCollem scored at 9:47 of the first period to tie it, 1-1, but the Bulldogs went back up on a goal by Kevin Limbert at 13:51 and never looked back. Matt Hoyle finished with 45 saves for Harvard.

Vermont 4, Providence 1 - The visiting Friars (7-15-3, 4-11-3 Hockey East) scored first but it was all UVM (15-6-4, 10-5-3) after that as Viktor Stalberg had a goal and an assist to lead the seventh-ranked Catamounts.

UNH 4, Maine 1 - James van Riemsdyk and Mike Sislo each had a goal and an assist and the No. 11 Wildcats (13-8-4, 9-6-3 Hockey East) beat the visiting Black Bears (11-13-3, 6-10-2) for the sixth straight time.

Dartmouth 5, Brown 2 - Scott Fleming scored twice and the No. 19 Big Green (12-7-3, 9-4-2 ECAC) scored three unanswered goals in the third period in a win over the host Bears (2-16-4, 2-11-3).

Cornell 2, Quinnipiac 1 - Evan Barlow scored a power-play goal 2:52 into overtime, lifting the fifth-ranked Big Red (15-3-4, 10-2-3 ECAC) past the visiting Bobcats (14-11-2, 7-6-2).

Sacred Heart 6, RIT 4 - David Berube scored his second goal of the game at 15:13 of the final period to break a 4-4 tie as the visiting Pioneers (7-16-4, 7-11-3 Atlantic) surprised the Tigers (16-10-1, 15-5-1).

Bentley 4, Holy Cross 1 - Erik Peterson, Dustin Cloutier, and Marc Menzione each had a goal and an assist and the Falcons (14-12-1, 12-8-1 Atlantic) beat the host Crusaders (10-12-5, 9-9-3).

Air Force 3, UConn 2 - Matt Fairchild scored at 8:19 of the third period, getting the host Falcons (18-7-2, 15-4-2 Atlantic) past the Huskies (6-21-1, 5-14-1).

Amherst 4, Colby 2 - Jeff Landers scored twice and assisted on two others to figure in all the scoring, leading the Lord Jeffs (13-4-1, 11-2-1 NESCAC), ranked 13th in Division 3, past the visiting White Mules (5-11-3, 3-9-2).

Women
Dartmouth 1, Brown 0 - Sarah Newnam scored with 5:40 left as the No. 8 Big Green (15-6-2, 12-3-2 ECAC) downed the visiting Bears (5-17-1, 4-12-0), despite a valiant effort by Nicole Stock, who stopped 47 shots.

Harvard 2, Yale 1 - Cori Bassett and Jenny Brine scored third-period power-play goals, helping the host Crimson (12-7-3, 11-4-2 ECAC) extend their winning streak to six games.

BU 2, UConn 2 - Caroline Bourdeau scored in the seventh round of the shootout after the teams skated to a 2-2 tie as the visiting Terriers (13-10-6, 7-6-4 Hockey East) upset the No. 9 Huskies (18-8-3, 9-5-2).
