Also serving at the helm: Chick Stahl (acting manager for 40 games during suspensions of Jimmy Collins in 1906; was slated to be manager in '07 but quit and subsequently committed suicide just before start of season); Cy Young (acting manager for six games at start of '07 season); George Huff (hired away from University of Illinois to succeed Young, but quit after just eight games); Bob Unglaub (first baseman and team captain took over for Huff but lasted just 29 games); Rudy York (interim manager for one game in 1959 between firing of Higgins and hiring of Jurges); Del Baker (interim manager for seven games in 1960 between firing of Jurges and return of Higgins); Pete Runnels (interim manager for final 16 games in 1966 after firing of Herman); Eddie Popowski (interim manager for final nine games in 1969 after firing of Dick Williams and final game of 1973 after firing of Kasko).
17. Jack Barry
Had one very good year as player-manager after winning as a player in 1915 and '16. The longtime Holy Cross baseball coach went off to war in 1918 and had to relinquish his managing duties.
