Opening Day

Sun shines on Red Sox Nation

Posted by David Epstein April 8, 2013 08:30 AM

There isn’t much question what to write about today. It's opening day at Fenway Park and even if you aren’t a big baseball fan, the energy that comes to Kenmore square can be infectious. For today the weather looks warm and dry with abundant sunshine mixing with clouds. Temperatures will hit the middle to upper 60s today. Winds will be much lighter than yesterday afternoon, coming from the west. Those light winds will let a sea breeze kick in during the first half of the game, so it will cool off into the upper 50s by 5PM.
The sea breeze comes from the east/northeast (30 degrees on the picture) and goes against balls heading for the outfield. fenway hits.jpegThis is why when the wind comes form that direction, singles are the predominant hit as opposed to a southwest wind that gives the balls a bit of lift and helps them get out of the park.

It's a good thing the game is today because starting tomorrow sunshine will be limited and showers and even steady rain are in the forecast until we hit the weekend.

I'll be updating gardening tips and weather information on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
