How did you decide to write a book about surviving breast cancer? When you get diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s the scariest moment of your life. I dealt with my situation in the most controlling way I possibly could. I had eight months of chemo, two months of radiation. I always wore high heels and my lipstick. I never missed a plan. It had robbed me of so much, it was not going to rob me of my life. . . . Kelley [Tuthill] was diagnosed within six months of me, and she and I formed this bond. One Saturday morning, I thought, I want to write a book, something that talks about this, and talks about all the things I wish I’d known.

How has your life changed? It completely changed how I look at things on a day to day basis. I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. I don’t make excuses. Life is such a blessing and your friends and your family are such a blessing. Some people I thought were friends couldn’t take it. But there are more loving and kind people in the world than you would ever dream.

Some people might say, in the midst of all that, why fashion? What does it matter? It happens to be my passion. I think a well-rounded life is full of passion. When you’re sick, nothing helps you feel better than looking your best. And that was my gift during that time. There are so many young women going through cancer treatment — so many. Fashion's just another form of therapy really.
