EMD Serono Inc., a biopharmaceutical company with operations in Rockland, said interim president James Hoyes has been permanently appointed to that post.

The company, which focuses on developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, is an affiliate Merck KGaA, the German drug and chemical giant.

In May, EMD Serono said that Fereydoun Firouz had resigned as president and chief executive to pursue other professional opportunities.

Hoyes is responsible for driving the strategic direction and managing EMD Serono’s day-to-day business.
