Diving in

As summer begins to wind down, the temperature still remains high in some places (in the Northern hemisphere, of course). Cool waters call out to those who would leap in, momentarily letting gravity have its way with them, pulling them down as they flail, shout or twist. Collected here are a handful of photos of divers around the world, showing their professional artistry, daredevil bravado, or just simple joy as they take the plunge. (36 photos total)

Alves Jucelino of Brazil dives 25m (82 ft) from the top of Roche Dam during the World Cup Cliff Diving Race in Bardonecchia, about 100km (65 mi) northwest of Turin, northern Italy on August 11, 2010. (REUTERS/Stefano Rellandini)

Fan-tabi-hoo-ho! Marvelous pictures. Any idea how i.e. what cameras would take the images of photos such as No. 9 & 34.

Wow, great pictures. But some of them, like #1, are just weird... no reference what they are diving to.

@SilentRio - the photographer selected a high shutter speed, I'd say upward of 1/2000th.
Most of your modern pro-sumer range of cameras could handle that (a decent ISO without loss of quality), slap on some decent glass you're you shooting with the pros.

:)

Number 20 is amazing. It looks as if the child is doing a handstand on water.

Some of the faces people make when diving are quite funny.

Pic# 25-Take a close look. It's probably the boy Barak Obama. Pic# 29 is free style diving 7-year old style - a split complete with peace signs. She's the future of diving competition. #31 looks like he's gonna slam into the rocks. Thank you Big Picture for this amazing shots on a Friday! It made my day.

The caption on #23 needs fixing! It says, "Ukraine's Ililya Kvasha and Prygorov Oleksiy". However, you have the second guy's name back to front - "Oleksiy" is his first name (like Alexei in Russian).

A new danger practice has started to be a problem for Authorities in my country (I suppose that it is the same in others places). They call it balconing. The big idea is simple: you drink alcohol or use drugs until you become crazy, then you try to look like the jumpers in the pictures, jumping from the balcony to the swimming-pool of the hotel where you are spending your holidays in Spain. The problem is that you don´t know how deep the swimming-pool is, or if your aim is good enough… Only this summer 30 guys have dead in these stupid plays. By the way, great pictures, as usual. Jose, Seville.

How in the world do the men get so friggen muscular from diving? I notice the women are fit and in shape but not really muscular. I can see it being like Pilates where you do get toned, from all the twisting and turning. But jeesh...these guys are ripped!
