Stormy skies

In the past several months, powerful storms have wreaked havoc in many places, torrential rains in central Europe and parts of China, tornadoes in Australia, Montana and the American Midwest, and strong thunderstorms across the northeast. Now, as Tropical Storm Bonnie makes landfall in Florida and heads into the Gulf of Mexico, oil cleanup is being suspended, and the final "kill" operation is delayed for at least one more week. These storms have been destructive and deadly, but beautiful and awe-inspiring at the same time. Collected here are a handful of photographs of stormy skies, lightning strikes and storm damage from the past several months. (37 photos total)

A large storm cell moves over farmland between the towns of Ross and Stanley, North Dakota on Monday July 12, 2010. A tornado was reported to have touched down for a few minutes from the cell. (AP Photo/ The Forum, Dave Samson)

The picture of the guys at the Main Street Casino in Billings, MT doesnt even show the worst of it. We were fortunate that no one was killed, only 2 hail-related injuries reported. But our MetraPark Arena, the largest building in Montana, sustained intense damage.
check this out:
http://billingsgazette.com/news/local/image_a855a284-7cc8-11df-804d-001cc4c03286.html

when you drive by the building you can see the seats in the arena. it's crazy.

#31 Comment-Nature is indeed powerful and awesome but you don't worship it. That's for the heathen. You take care of nature as a good steward that the Great Almighty made you to be. When we have a tornado warning here in Oklahoma, we use our minds and the common sense He gave us in order to survive. We hide in storm shelters, basements or closets and pray for His protection over us and others in the path of the storm/tornado threat.

Picture 22 corresponds to a heavy storm in my city, Valparaiso. I can tell you that it was really unusual, the storm hit the city with heavy winds and rains during 2 days. It affected the same part of the country that was stroke by an earthquake last February. I was really scared the day of the storm, since the wind was so strong that it actually moved the building where I live. By the way, the earthquake was 8.8 Richter and it lasted 3 loooooong minutes.

Excelllent pictures!! I said "wooooowww" like 10 times while looking at them.
I have a question and maybe somebody can answer me here. I don't want to be rude or nothing else but it is just I can't find a razonable answer by myself... This is the question: why all the people that lives in areas where tornadoes are "common" keep building their homes of wood?
I mean, I have seen pictures of houses completely destroyed, towns where there is at least one tornado per year... Why they don't use bricks to build them once they are destroyed? Maybe bricks are very expensive, but I'm sure is cheaper that re-building everything from scratch... (and I'm not taking into account the personal belongings of the people).
I hope somebody can give me an answer.
Thanks TBP!!

fapp - lots of homes in the US are brick and mortar, but wood is plentiful and a lot cheaper. Brick and mortar also get destroyed by hurricanes. They are much more expensive to rebuild and flying bricks are no fun.

@49 & @60 - Seriously? I think it's such a shame you look at these photos and think "Ahh, God's doing his mysterious work again" and call anyone who respects nature a "heathen". Nature is the true force to be reckoned with.

The houses destroyed in these pictures were destroyed not by hurricanes but by tornadoes, which though smaller, are orders of magnitude more powerful in their confined area. An F5 tornado will level a brick and mortar building. (It's happened.) While you *can* build to withstand tornadoes, it is prohibitively expensive and you have to forgo amenities like nice windows. Besides, the destruction wrought by a tornado is so confined that the odds are in your favor if you simply bet on not being struck by one and then make minimal preparations (have a basement, have a shelter plan, etc). That said, I know a guy who's been in two houses that were hit. Both houses were completely destroyed, with considerable personal injury. His latest house includes a room specifically built as a tornado shelter. (House itself is timber frame. He did look into building a tornado proof home, but it was prohibitively expensive, so he settled for a tornado-proof room on the main level.) The main lesson to take home is that severe weather should be taken seriously. Know where to take shelter. Buy a weather radio, and keep its batteries fresh. Pay attention to the weather. If things turn south, don't wait for the worst; go to your shelter location and make yourself comfortable.

To Boston.com and many other websites...

This is the way to display images. I love that fact that you just scroll down. Not like the CLICK-to-the-next-image galleries and photo essays that currently rule the web. It takes so long when every image is its own page. To just fly down a single page may not be as elegant of a total format, but it literally must by 10x faster.

And, BTW, the images here are awesome

I lived in a town where a tornado ripped through the brick and mortar buildings of the downtown area. Tornadoes are powerful and unpredictable. I don't think you can build anything that would be "tornado proof" short of an underground bunker.

The pictures are awesome. Wood is the best insulator. thats why most homes are built with it and its cheaper. I am so thankful I do not live in this type of nature. I do live in a earthquake area, but the quakes we have had are small. its amazing that something so distructive is so beautiful.

Another testimony to the power of the natural world. If humans could just prepare themselves and technology to simply deal with the amazing tragedies that people often indure from natural events, it would make more sense than manufacturing wars to do the damage.

Picture 32 implies a rotation that may simply be an artifact. Usually the high level clouds will move in a different direction and speed than those at low levels, but the animation implies a uniform rotation rate and direction at all levels. My guess: the spacecraft-versus-Earth movements resulted in the implied rotation seen in the animation.

These types of storms were happening before humans were on this earth. It is a common occurance when there is an atmosphere. Live in a cave and an earthquake could knock it down.
