Jay Leno is drawing about 5 million viewers every night -- which sounds horrid, except that it's roughly the viewership he got on "The Tonight Show." Are you one of those viewers? Were you a fan of "The Tonight Show" starring Jay? And if you've defected, is there anything Leno could do to win you back? We'll be printing some comments in Ye Olde Paper Globe, so please post your thoughts here!

  1. honestly, I would rather watch anything other than Jay Leno. Thank goodness other networks are not as insane as NBC. Between ABC & CBS & the cable networks I find many other shows to watch that are not as self serving as the Jay Leno Show.

  1. The Monologue is always good an would watch just for that. Some of the show is tentative and shows as though feeling his way. The segement with new comics is weak sometimes silly and I often fast forward. The 10 at 10 segment is good and should be kept. J-walking and headlines are a winner also. The 'Earn your Plug' business is often silly and tranparent. I'm not sure why there is a desire to mix two musical guest but sometimes it works. I'd give it more time before pulling the plug.

  1. Love Jay -- really enjoyed the "old" show...not at all fond of the new format: e.g., Kevin stuck waaaay out in the hinterland; garish (orange-purple) overly large sets; stiff interviews; green car races; ...well, you get the idea.

Would welcome a transplanted return of the old Tonight Show at the new 10:00 PM.

  1. The people that watch him aren't as high at 10:00 PM as they are at 11:30 PM so he just isn't so funny and obama can't be on every night I hope.

  1. No. Boring! It is an okay format for late night, when you need some drone to help you lull off, but its not very entertaining at primetime. I enjoy the over doneness of all of the Law n Order's and CSI's over Jay Leno. I don't really care about these stars that he has on as guests. We're saturated with them; everwhere you look the star he has on his show was on all the morning shows, all the entertainment shows, in the magazines etc. They come on shows like Leno and the rest because they are promoting something or squashing some rumor or indiscretion. I'm glad the network will be proven wrong by our local programmer.

  1. I watched it the first week. It was bland, boring, and not particularly funny. I am no longer a viewer.

  1. I've watched it about 3 times and been disappointed with the show.
    a) I think the 10 o'clock hour is a slightly different demographic than he had for the old show;
    b) I never thought he was particularly funny anyway. He sometimes had good material but his monologue is annoying when he is obviously reading the stuff off of the teleprompter;
    c) the green challenge segment quickly outlived it's entertainment value;
The only reason I will ever watch it again is if he has a particularly interesting guest on. In any case I would just DVR it, watch it when I want, fast-forward past the commercials and avoid the subsequent newscast which is typically not worth watching unless there is REALLY some news happening. Most of it is repetetive and/or irrelevant. Way to much time devoted to weather and sports and VERY little news.

  1. Never watched yet. I WAS looking forward to the show, but I thought it was going to be a once per week show, not every single weeknight! So not wanting it to get into 5 hours of my life every week, I decided to not watch at all. I have a DVR, but that is still to much to watch per week. We like to watch the news at 10pm before bed. But i'm not recording 5 hours to watch later. I also then realized it was just the Tonight Show moved to 10pm; well, I hardly watch it or record it now, I will not miss it. I only record the Tonight Show or Late Show if a celebrity or performance is on I happen to have in interest in.

  1. Yes! I love Jay Leno and Kevin Eubanks! I wish he did Headlines and the other ones at the beginning like in the past instead of at the end now but aside from that keep him on.

  1. I love it and actually watch it more often now that it is earlier.

Posted by Kathy October 17, 09 07:08 AM
  1. His monologue is what I watch - it is usually fun. The rest of the guest stuff is sometimes interesting, but I usually don't stay up for that. If the show were at 11PM I would never watch it.

Posted by PlumHunter October 17, 09 07:19 AM
  1. I don't watch the show unless it is a last resort. However even then I will usually find something else to watch at ten p.m.. Conan's show is terrible and serves only to showcase his lack of talent. I'm not sure if Jay can do anything to "win me back". My loyalty to any of the late night shows was for the guests not the hosts. NBC made a huge mistake bumping Jay from the Tonight show.

Posted by Jackarooty October 17, 09 07:29 AM
  1. Donny and Marie Osmond would do better!!!

Posted by Paul October 17, 09 07:35 AM
  1. Jay has never been known as an engaging interviewer and this new format doesn't help. Strangely, Jay is much better mingling with 'common people' than he is interviewing celebrities. He appears to like it more as well.

    Posted by Essexcnty1 October 17, 09 07:35 AM
  1. it is terrible -- too silly and just not funny,,,he is the one laughing most at the non-funny material

Posted by terry October 17, 09 07:39 AM
  1. For those of us who don't stay awake until 11:30 to watch late-night TV, Jay offers some lightness and humor at the end of the day, when the last thing I want to watch before falling asleep is another Miami or NY murder or police drama. I actually watch his show more now than I did when he was on later and think it's a great alternative to the other 10:00 shows.

  1. jay looks uncomfortable on the new set without the desk - some of the segments are pretty silly - could do without them - disappointed with the show on the whole

Posted by richard October 17, 09 07:49 AM
  1. I like Jay Leno but scheduling his show at 10 p.m. was a mistake. Late at night is when most people get sleepy. I was a network programming executive before I proposed moving televangelists to Saturday mornings and cartoons to Sunday mornings.

  1. I hate Jay Leno. He's a hack, steals all of Howard Sterns material

    Posted by Nick S. October 17, 09 08:07 AM
  1. He steals all his "bit" material from other shows (i.e.Howard Stern). He is so phony that it is hard to watch him conduct an interview. He stunk before, but with the later time slot not as many people noticed.

Posted by Michelle October 17, 09 08:10 AM
  1. There is no excitement or adventure in the show. It is exactly the Tonight Show again.

He's a terrible interviewer - we learn nothing new from the guests.

Leno should stop stealing his comedy bits from others, and instead try something unique.

Posted by chris October 17, 09 08:10 AM
  1. An avid JL fan, I can no longer watch the show. Should have stayed at 11:30. Should have kept the same format. Staged "Jaywalking Episodes"? Are you kidding me? While I'm at it, Conan is no where near as good as it was. Andy Rick adds nothing at all to the show! In the past I rarely missed a show. Now I use late night to watch DVDs. Both Jay and Conan are tremendously talented so I don't blame them for the current state of their shows. The indiduals who cooked up this idea should be seperated from the NBC payroll.

Posted by mario fernandes October 17, 09 08:12 AM
  1. Leno is great! I am watching him but GIVE HIM HIS DESK BACK the way he had on the Tonight show...he looks awkward and uncomfortable sitting in the chair and it distracts him from his delivery and what he is saying and he seems uncomfortable when speaking with guests. He is just on earlier really so give him a comfortable format.

Posted by Anne Conner October 17, 09 08:16 AM
  1. Jay Leno is obviously good at what he does, and obviously people really like him, deservedly so-but for NBC to put him on at 10p every single night is a REALLY bad idea. Since i can remember, there's always been a 10p drama on, and i'm still used to that, so now I turn that channel and go elsewhere looking for it. You can't have something w/ a late night feel on a non-late night hours, it doesn't work. Plus, doesn't it degrade Conan's promotion? I mean, what was the big deal that he got the tonight show gig because J is still on!

    Posted by t October 17, 09 08:22 AM
  1. The problem here is that Jay naturally just isn't that funny. He tries too hard, and relies way too much on gags and formulas to fill the time. He needs to jettison the bottom 80% of his material and do a once a week 1 hour show with his most entertaining 20% of his writers production.

    Posted by WVW - W. Newton October 17, 09 08:25 AM
  1. Terrible show. I have watched it, stopped watching it, will never watch it again. This kind of bland, no-risk pablum is what's wring with American television..

Posted by stephen londergan October 17, 09 08:25 AM
  1. Leno would be better if he played to the audience and not the orchestra. He doesn't have to look over to the band for approval after every comment. Also, he really should just tell the joke and not keep trying to explain it. It seems like he doesn't have any self-assurance.

Posted by Sid Kerber October 17, 09 08:33 AM
  1. You really should be asking what we think of the news on NBC. In Boston , its terrible. The ladies are not good newscasters, they "report" on silly stories, most of what they say has alresdy been seen in the Globe the day before, and except for traffic accidents there is no real local news.

As far as Leno goes, it is awful. He promised a "new" show but its just more of the same old stuff at an earlier hour. The set is sophmoric and the guest spots are juvenile. He should be on for a half an hour not a full hour. Then, maybe, he'd have some spark in the show.

    Posted by Bush 41 October 17, 09 08:36 AM
  1. never really cared for jay - heard his new show was different - new but it seems tha same as his old show - new stage maybe.

Posted by peter October 17, 09 08:45 AM
  1. We have been watching it since its debut last month and generally like it. Its the only show of its kind in that time slot.
We never watch the WHDH newscast that follows, due to its juvenile reliance on eye straining graphics and the jarring clothes that the anchors have every night

Posted by Debashis Ghosh October 17, 09 08:55 AM
  1. Have always liked Jay in the past. Do not like his new format, Kevin too far away and out of the camera range. Jay looks uncomfortable in big easy chair on edge of stage. Put him back behind his desk. Many of the guests appear on TV all the time. Needs new material. The last three nights have seemed funnier than before. Maybe he is improving. Hope so as I like Jay Leno.

  1. I watched for a couple of nights, got bored, and switched to something more interesting! It's the same old shtick he had on late night and it doesn't belong in the 10 pm slot. Television got more moronic when Jay moved to the earlier slot. He hasn't aged well.

Posted by Jane Bordzol October 17, 09 09:37 AM
  1. I enjoy the show --- especially the monologue which is what I liked the most when he was on late - I don't care for the skit with the kids as even though they are sometimes funny not enough to keep doing it. I love the jaywalking & some interviews. I especially like the early time as I couldn't always stay awake after the news.

Posted by Carol October 17, 09 09:39 AM
  1. I have refused to watch it although I have always liked Jay Leno. There is little enough good drama on TV without removing an hour of it nightly. If NBC thinks taking the cheap way out will work, they are wrong.

Posted by bonmarchebabes October 17, 09 10:07 AM
  1. I really like Jay leno, wish he had the desk back. I could never watch at 11:30 as it was on too late. Can't stand letterman or conan.

Posted by Deb October 17, 09 10:11 AM
  1. I only watched for about 10 minutes once. Seemed exactly like The Tonight Show. Never liked Leno. Too much ego involved. Has to explain all his jokes as if he plays to real dummies, which is extremely annoying. He should just retire, but he's too cheap to spend his savings, besides thinking he's the greatest thing to hit television.

    Posted by Chris4 October 17, 09 10:13 AM
  1. I never liked the talk, only the monologue & skits on the old show. I'd watch Mondays for "Headlines", then go to bed.

Checked out the new show twice. Not very funny and totally lacking in vitality. He should retire.

Posted by Dan Tanner October 17, 09 10:14 AM
  1. Always record it and watch the opening monlogue. He just needs time to get his 10 pm rhythm and niche. Not pulling the plug yet.

Posted by MizRoz October 17, 09 10:18 AM
  1. As a fan of JL on the tonight show, I am disappointed in the 10pm format.Jay is uncomfortable on the stuffed chairs. Material has been poor. Being on every night is a mistake. Not as big a mistake as having Conan on at all. Never watched Letterman before and only occasionally now,but he and that Paul as wretched as they are beat Conan by a mile.

  1. they should give Dave Letterman the boots and Make Jay Leno an offer he can't refuse and take Lettermans place

  1. jay leno is the best, he should be back on his regular night time at 11; 30 i love him no matter what time he's on but i'm sure he would get his old fans back if he was in the late time slot. thank you mary . from boston.

  1. I like Jay, always have. The new show is okay but they made changes for the sake of making changes. Bring back the desk, make the set smaller and more intimate, and stop trying so hard. Just go back to the formula that worked at 11:30. There is not a big difference between 10 and 11:30. They should never have given Conan the Tonight Show. He is terrible. Best fix...Dump Conan and move Jay back to 11:30.

Posted by pnwn October 17, 09 10:53 AM
  1. People didn't watch the Jay Leno Show at 11:30 they watched the Tonight Show featuring Jay Leno.

The good thing is now I have one less choice to make at 10pm...not good for NBC though.

Posted by Lemmy October 17, 09 10:59 AM
  1. I recorded a couple of the shows to watch later and I must admit, I am not at all a fan of the new format, it is childish and lacks any originality. In fact it is a terrible show, very silly and not very funny, too staged. The gags and bits just don't work. "Headlines" once funny, no longer make the grade, too overly exposed. He looks awkward without the "desk" The best thing about a DVD, is you can "fast-forward" past the bad parts, but then the show is over (probably the best part). So, I stopped using the DVD and will watch a good drama on the other networks. The new show is a huge disappointment, I, as many fans, no longer watch Jay. Sorry Jay, this venture is major dud.

  1. I am unhappy with the show. An hour at 10:00 five times a week is too much of anything. There are some excellent shows I like at 10:00 on other channels, so I rarely watch Leno anymore. When he was on at 11:30, I always watched the news at 11:00 and then Jay's monologue and the some of his segments that followed, but this new format doesn't work for me. Jay looks awkward without his desk too.

Posted by Audrey October 17, 09 11:06 AM
  1. I've never really liked Jay, so I was not predisposed to watch anyway. But a house guest wanted to watch an episode, so I suffered through one. It was a scaled down version of the Tonight Show. Besides not particularly enjoying it, I find it highly immoral of Jay to quasi-compete with the Tonight Show (although not in the same timeslot) after having given up the reins to Conan. And I think its probably a breach of some kind of duty on NBC's part to partially sabotage Conan's fledgling effort. I wonder what would have happened to Leno if Carson opened up a competing show at 10 PM when Leno was just taking over. Bet Jay wouldn't have liked that. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Posted by atteckus October 17, 09 11:27 AM
  1. Being on five nights a week at 10:00 is the problem. It takes away from so many programs that used to be on at that time (specifically Law & Order). In truth, if Jay wanted to still do this type of program, he should have stayed with his late show. Another option would be to limit the number of nights per week he would be on.

Posted by Joanne Buonopane October 17, 09 12:09 PM
  1. What a Bozo move on the part of NBC. Could not be happier that this idiotic programing change is flopping. Replace Leno with a test pattern -- that will be more interesting and entertaining than the lounge lizard act that NBC is programing

  1. Once again, the nice guy finishes last.

  1. Leno is the W.C. Fields of stand-up comedians -- i.e. NOT. On my sparkling new 52" TV screen, his head is bigger than my front door. Sitting in easy chairs with his guest beside, he reminds me of a chubby uncle I'd rather not be in the same living room with during holiday parties. He thinks he is funny, clever, and erudite. He is "none of the above." I'd rather watch the paltry TV detective, "Monk," than this bowl of bad hash.

    Posted by P.D. Berg October 17, 09 02:47 PM
  1. NBC should give Jay a weekly variety show or give him back The Tonight Show-sorry Conan, you're not cutting it! As for the news program-that needs to be revamped with qualified anchors and pertinent news.

Posted by evie squadrille October 17, 09 05:38 PM
  1. My husband and I are regular watchers of the Jay Leno show. I even like it more than his previous show. Jay Walking, Headlines, Earn Your Plug, and 10-at-10 are features we really enjoy. His monologue and Kevin Eubanks are as great as ever. His recent show where his 5'3" staffer went to try to become a model was hilarious. She was a funny as Ellen Degeneris, and really looked a lot like her. Please keep Jay on the air. The earlier time slot works well for us. We don't like "Conan" at all and don't watch him. We saw his act when he was on the later slot previously and don't think he is funny. He is also hard to look at (sorry, but he defines "homely.") Hooray for Jay.

    Posted by Mari Z. October 17, 09 06:08 PM
  1. Leno is now and always has been one of the funniest people on TV, and his new show is no exception. I watch it as often as I can. He is much funnier than Letterman, Conan or any of the others.

Posted by Craig Anderson October 17, 09 07:05 PM
  1. Well, we've learned that Craig Anderson is a brainless twit.

Johnny Carson endorsed David Letterman. I like Letterman. There is no need for any other similarly formatted show.

    Posted by Cap'n Geech October 20, 09 07:57 AM
  1. The idea has gotten a bit skewed. I was expecting a new format that highlighted comedy in all forms, and featured sketches, video clips, new comedians as well as veteran comics. Instead, we are getting "The Pre-Game Tonight Show" in its current format. The interesting thing is that both Jay and Conan are not succeeding in their new gigs. NBC pulled the switch too early in the game. But both are good at their craft as they are two of the most instinctively creative comics in the medium, and also two of the nicest people.....something Letterman will never be accused of. But neither are knocking it out of the park like they used to in their old formats.

It would behoove Leno to take control of this show and make it live up to its original potential. Make it a real comedy showcase. Get rid of the aura that is making this look like a warmed-over Tonight Show. Get rid of the comfy chairs and the desk. Lose the tie. Make the set look like a comedy club. This format can suceed because Jay Leno is a master of the comedy genre, but he's allowing himself to be watered down by NBC execs. Use your bully pulpit Jay; your network has no other option.

Posted by Pgooglie October 20, 09 09:15 AM
  1. I like Jay Leno, but the new show does not fit well together. I have watched the new 10:00 PM show once per week since it began airing. I liked the headlines and 'Jaywalking' segments; those parts bring out the best in Leno. He should do them immediately after the monologue just as he did in the 11:30 PM format. The '10 at 10 segment and the auto racing segments are pointless, as are the video clips etc that currently follow the monologue. Bring back the desk; he is not comfortable in the current setting.

Posted by Nick October 20, 09 09:18 PM
  1. absolutely not. have not will not. ever. any actor appearing as a guest on this show should be ashamed. this show takes away five prime hours that could be used for episodics. jay taking many jobs away from writers, actors, directors, d of p, camera op, grips, etc.

brass at nbc refuses to swallow pride and pull this disaster. local affiliates are none to happy about this because jay as a lead in is killing local news at 11pm, which is a money maker for those local channels.

not only that; jay's material sucks.

Posted by bloom October 20, 09 10:16 PM

Bring back the various dramas at 10pm. My favorite is the original
Law & Order, Law & Order Special Victim Unit.
I will never watch NBC at 10pm because of Jay Leno. That variety show is
for LATE night, not prime time. You NBC executive have really messed
up this time. Who wants to see Jay Leno in prime time?

Posted by Sandra Herron October 22, 09 11:13 AM
  1. I'm recording Jay Leno's show every day, I usually am in bed before 10 pm. His comedy is refreshing--love the street psychic, Jay walking and celebrity 10 questions.
