'Annie' trailer tugs at our morning heartstrings

Posted by Rachel Raczka March 6, 2014 10:30 AM

Will Gluck’s modern update of beloved musical "Annie" starring Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx finally has an official trailer.

The "Beasts of the Southern Wild" actress stars as the famed curly-haired sweetheart, who lives with Miss Hannigan, played by a rather alarming Cameron Diaz, and her fellow orphans in Harlem. Foxx appears as Benjamin Stacks ($$$), the film's version of Daddy Warbucks, an uptight billionaire with his eye on the city's mayoral seat. Rose Byrne appears as the good-natured Grace Farrell, while her real-life beau Bobby Cannavale makes an appearance in a newly written role as Stacks' political adviser.

The film arrives in theaters next Christmas.

Cinemania: Best 'morning after' films without 'Hangover' in the title

Posted by Peter Keough May 13, 2013 05:57 PM

It's happened to all of us: you wake up with no memory in a hotel room with a missing tooth, someone's baby, and Mike Tyson's tiger. Such is the appeal of the "Hangover" movies, the third of which opens on May 24 -- their excruciatingly apt and funny recreation of the universal experience of morning after amnesia and/or regrets.

There's a whole genre of such films-- which, excluding those in the "Hangover" series itself, do you think are the best?
You can submit your suggestions in the comments section or send them to me directly at We will pick the five most memorable choices and post them on line and in print next week.
Good luck!

Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring' teaser trailer released, Emma Watson gets rowdy

Posted by Rachel Raczka March 8, 2013 11:02 AM

If you ever wanted to see Hermione Granger bask in the glory of bottle service, the upcoming Sofia Coppola flick might be the place to do. The teaser trailer for "The Bling Ring" was released and shows Emma Watson slathering on the lip gloss, getting down in the club, and of course, ransacking the closets of the rich and famous with her fellow label-loving L.A. friends. Watson plays a character inspired by "Bling Ring" member, Alexis Neiers, who goes by the name "Nicki" in the film.

The film is based on Vanity Fair's profile of the crimes of Hollywood's Bling Ring, a group of teens who robbed the homes of the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, Lindsay Lohan, and Rachel Bilson in 2008-2009. According to the profile, they primarily stole designer goods and cash to the tune of more than $3 million and were tried for their various crimes in 2010.

Coppola's film faced scrutiny when it was revealed in December that members of the Ring and members of the LAPD who had assisted in the investigation were on payroll to consult for the movie.

The film will be in limited release June 14.
