After a decade of controversy, Newton North High School (left) finally opened on Walnut Street in Newtonville in 2010. With a price tag of $197.5 million, it is the most expensive public school ever built in Massachusetts.
The project evolved from a $40 million renovation into an entirely new school featuring two theaters, two gymnasiums, vocational facilities, and a swimming pool. To critics, it became a symbol of spending excess and the need to overhaul the way public schools are built. For more photos of the new building, click here.
