Henry Oliver "Hank" Hansen
Hansen was born and raised locally and went to Somerville High School. After he graduated, he joined the Marines and trained as a paramarine.
The sergeant was killed in action seven days after raising a flag on Mount Suribachi in 1945. He was initially identified for years as one of six men raising the flag in Iwo Jima in the iconic photograph. But a Congressional investigation revealed that Hansen participated in the first flag raising with a smaller flag and was not part of the famous photograph.
A park in Somerville is named in his honor and part of his story was told in the book and movie "Flags of our Fathers."
