Young people will have the chance Tuesday to question the two candidates for mayor this fall. The Teen Mayoral Election Forum, at 7 p.m. in the Peabody Institute Library, 82 Main St., will feature City Councilor at Large Edward A. “Ted” Bettencourt and Sean R. Fitzgerald, former chief of staff to Mayor Michael J. Bonfanti. The men are squaring off in the Nov. 8 election to succeed Bonfanti, who opted against running for reelection. The forum is intended to enable residents ages 11 to 18 to ask the candidates where they stand on local issues affecting young people. Students from social studies and government classes at Higgins Middle School and Peabody Veterans Memorial High School will be participating, but all teens are encouraged to attend. Audience members will be able to ask questions, and questions can be submitted in advance at the library’s young adult area or by e-mailing Teen volunteers will be on hand at the debate to read those questions. The forum will be taped for airing on Peabody’s cable access station. City Clerk Timothy Spanos, meanwhile, is reminding residents that the deadline to register to vote in the election is Wednesday, when his office will be open until 8 p.m. to accommodate last-minute applications. - John Laidler
