Harvard professor George Whitesides of Newton is a chemical biologist whose current work involves trying to make microorganisms into useful nano-tools.
He was the son of a chemical engineer who became a chemistry professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963. He enjoyed the field.
As he explained, "You're chemistry. I'm chemistry. The walls are chemistry. Everything, from our perceptions to our senses and our intuitions, is basically chemistry. It's all atoms and molecules."
