Nine Boston public school teachers earned National Board Certification this past year, city school officials said this week.

The certification, run by the nonprofit National Board for Professional Teaching Standard, involves a multi-year process of standards-based performance assessment and peer review.

“Like board-certified doctors and accountants, National Board Certified teachers have honed their skills through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review,” said a statement from Boston School Committee chair Michael D. O’Neill. “Boston Public Schools is fortunate to have these highly skilled teachers raising the level of excellence in our classrooms.”

A total of 4,980 teachers nationwide earned the certification during 2012. Of that group, 28 teachers were from Massachusetts, putting the state at 29th in the country for the most certified teachers last year.

Since the certification began in 1987, 102,237 teachers have been certified in the country. Massachusetts ranks 28th nationally with 565 teachers certified.

Seventy-seven of those teachers have been from Boston Public Schools.

“There is nothing more important than having a quality teacher at the head of every single classroom,” said a statement from Boston Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. “These teachers are leading the pack and we are proud to call them our colleagues.”
