Wellesley schools will be released early today and canceled Friday amid the first major snow storm of the new year, according to the district's superintendent.
Superintendent David Lussier sent out the following email around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning:
Based on the forecast and road conditions, the Wellesley Public Schools will be dismissing students early today. Wellesley Middle School and Wellesley High School will dismiss students at 1PM today. Wellesley Elementary Schools will dismiss students at 2PM today. All buses will be running at these earlier times. All after-school and evening activities are cancelled today. All METCO students (Elementary, Middle, and High School) will be dismissed at 1PM. Kindergarten students who have a half-day today should be picked up at their regular time (12PM). Full-day Kindergarten students should be picked up at 2PM. There is no WCCC today. Any Kindergarten students will remain at their home schools today to be picked up at either 12PM (for half-day students) or 2PM (for full-day students). All other students participating in WCCC will remain at their home schools to be picked up. There will be no afternoon PreK session at PAWS. Full-day PreK students should be picked up at 11:40AM. We will continue to monitor the weather situation and make a decision about Friday later today.
Lussier also sent another email out at 3:40 p.m. to alert locals that school Friday will be canceled:
Due to the anticipated snowfall predicted through tomorrow morning, the Wellesley Public Schools will be closed on Friday, January 3rd. In order to accommodate for plowing and cleanup around our buildings, all activities and rentals scheduled for WPS buildings are also canceled for tomorrow. Buildings will be re-open for scheduled activities on Saturday and Sunday.
The storm is expected to dump 6 to 12 inches on the Boston area, with up to 16 inches possible on the coastline. Light snow began overnight, but the bulk of the accumulation is expected to happen Thursday night into Friday, according to meteorologists.
