The race, which will wind through MassBay's Wellesley campus, will benefit the Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund that was started this year in her honor, which aims to help students in the business field. Campbell graduated from MassBay in 2005 with an associate degree in business administration, according to the school.
"A few years out of Medford High School, Krystle was looking to improve her life by going back to school and earning a degree," officials said in a statement, noting that she transferred to UMass Boston to pursue a four-year degree. "Hers is what MassBay calls a success story."
Campbell, 29, was at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15 when two bombs exploded, detonated by alleged bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Campbell, along with two others, lost her life. Dozens more were injured.
The 5K will begin at 50 Oakland St. at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, rain or shine. The event costs $20 in advance, and $25 the day of the event. The first 300 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Officials said they are also still accepting sponsors for the event.
Officials said they will aim to have the event be fun and uplifting for all families, with music, food, games, medals, and prizes – all while enjoying some exercise.
