The Wellesley police, fire and Municipal Light Plant crews were responding to several major power outages throughout town late Monday afternoon as Hurricane Sandy swept through the region.
Most of the outages were due to trees taking down telephone poles and wires. "The damage is very serious throughout Wellesley and it is unlikely that it will be repaired shortly," the email alert said.
"The power will most likely be out for several hours, and may not be repaired until tomorrow," the alert said. "We will continue to send out updates as we can and when we get more information."
Many of the wires coming down have started fires in the street, the alert said.
"There are numerous trees down all over town, including trees that have struck houses and are blocking streets. Efforts are being made to keep the main roads open, however motorists should not travel on the streets unless it is absolutely necessary."
