Wellesley South made yet another comeback, but South Burlington, Vt. beat the Massachusetts state champions in their New England regional tournament game on Monday, 5-3.
Coach Dave Rosenblatt's team earned walk-of victories in each of its last two games -- the Massachusetts state title game and its first New England regional game against Scarborough, Maine -- but Wellesley South found out what it feels like to be on the other end of a late-game win.
With the score tied 3-3 going into the top of the sixth inning, South Burlington scored twice to take a two-run lead.
After a John Frates single, Wellesley South went down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning. The loss made Wellesley South's record in the regional tournament 1-1.
Wellesley South was down 3-1 going in to the bottom of the fifth inning. After RBI singles by Michael Bomes and Derrald Webb, the score was tied, setting up the third dramatic finish in as many games for Wellesley South.
The game began at 8:30 a.m. in Bristol, Conn. It had been scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Sunday night but was postponed.
Wellesley South's next game will be played on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Bedford, New Hampshire and will be broadcast on NESN.
