If you hear helicopters in Waltham over the next few weeks, don't be alarmed: NStar will be conducting two types of aerial inspections of the city from now into April.
Comprehensive visual inspections, the annual detailed overhead transmission line examination, will start this afternoon. These detailed inspections will require the flight crew to closely hover or circle around structures for a few minutes.
Haverfield Aviation, who is contracted to do the work, will fly a Hughes MD500, with a white body and dark blue tail and a marking ID of N369D.
Work is conducted seven days per week, weather permitting and during daylight hours, with the exception of Easter Sunday.
NStar will also conduct aerial infrared inspections, which are scheduled to begin the week of April 2. These patrols will be done by helicopter, with Hot Shots performing the inspections and an NStar observer on board. They will use a white jet ranger helicopter with a blue stripe. The registration ID is 37WA.
