Republican Charlie Baker will field questions about his run for governor with his wife Lauren Brighton at their Swampscott home on Thursday afternoon in his first public appearance since launching his campaign by video Wednesday.
Baker, who ran and lost to Gov. Deval Patrick in 2010, is so far the lone candidate for governor on the Republican side, and members of the GOP from both the moderate and conservative wings embraced his second candidacy this week after U.S. Sen. Scott Brown opted against running, leaving the party with few strong options.
Early last month, as he was still considering his political future, Baker suggested that in a second campaign he may let voters peer deeper into his private life.
The at-home press conference could be designed to do exactly that. The Republican said he tried hard in 2010 to keep his private life out of the campaign, but realizes now that voters like to get to know the candidate beyond their policy positions, suggesting a more prominent role in a 2014 campaign for his wife Lauren, with whom he has three children.
