Twenty-eight new residential units and a community center will soon call East First Street in South Boston home after the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Board approved a project for the area.
The $8.5-million development will take the existing one-story commercial/storage structure at 621 East First St. and add a three-story addition to it, tripling the building’s square-footage to 43,870-square-feet.
The first-floor will provide an estimated 13,400-square-feet of space for a community center that will include a gym, locker rooms, teen space, office, day care, and wellness center. A barber shop will also be located in the ground floor space.
The second, third, and forth floors will be devoted to 28 residential units that will consist of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.
Parking for 40 vehicles will be provided in a garage.
The BRA estimates the project will create 25 construction jobs.
