Residents, elected officials and corporate sponsors on Thursday officially welcomed the South Boston Community Health Center’s new pharmacy to the neighborhood.
The pharmacy, located on West Broadway, opened in October, and it has already made an impact on the community it serves.
"I think this is great," said South Boston resident Susan Dewolfe. "It's a lot more convenient, especially for my elderly aunt. I think the most I've waited is 10 minutes, which is a lot better than the other places around."
"We've partnered with a number of health centers throughout Massachusetts and it's a good formula for both us and the health centers," said Mark Dumouchel, president and one of seven partners at Eaton Apothecary. "I think the health center recognized that a pharmacy would be beneficial and we were happy to help."
Along with supplying residents with top-notch services and speedy refills on prescriptions, the center was also championed as a way to better serve the elderly and families in the neighborhood.
"This is a terrific step forward for the community health center," said Matt Fishman, vice president for community health at Partners HealthCare. "This means that neighborhood residents will be able to fill their prescriptions right in the same place they see their doctor. This will help residents get the medicine and the help they need."
Many who attended the Thursday morning ceremony seemed especially eager for the pharmacy to start providing affordable services to the people who live right in the neighborhood.
"This is a terrific service for our patients," said Bill Halpin Jr., CEO of the South Boston Community Health Center. "We can now see our patients upstairs and by the time they get done their prescription is ready with no hassles."
Although convince and personal service with a smile, was what many people talked about, Representative Nick Collins also highlighted the importance of a center based in the heart of South Boston.
"I'm excited that right here in South Boston we can provide quality health care and at an affordable rate," said Collins.
