Somerville Police are asking the public for help in identifying a man who attempted to sexually assault a woman in Porter Square late Monday night.
Police said the woman was walking on Porter Street in the Somerville side of Porter Square at 11:35 p.m. Monday when a man walked up and attempted to sexually assault her.
Somerville Deputy Police Chief Michael Cabral said the man grabbed the woman’s leg, but she was not knocked down. She screamed and the man then fled north on Porter Street towards Summer Street. The woman was not injured, police said.
The man was described as about 5-feet-9 inches tall with short straight hair and was wearing a black jacket with a collar, baggy pants and nice shoes, according to police.
Cabral said police are asking anyone who may have seen the man in Porter Square or anything suspicious to contact Somerville Police Detectives at 617-625-1600 extension 7224.
Cabral said there have not been any similar incidents reported in the city recently, but a notification about the attempted assault Monday was sent out to Somerville residents.
Police are also reminding people to remain vigilant when walking, especially if walking alone.
