Curtatone is asking the Board of Aldermen to approve a moratorium on dispensaries until July 1, 2014.
“Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly approved the legalization of medical marijuana with 63 percent of the vote last November, and I will honor the decision of the voters,” he said in a statement. “As with any new use or business in the city, we want to be diligent, thoughtful, and educated before making any decisions.”
Many nearby communities rewrote zoning laws to restrict dispensary locations after an attempt by the town of Wakefield to ban dispensaries outright was rejected by Attorney General Martha Coakley in March.
State officials unveiled a proposed fee structure for marijuana dispensary licenses in May, but none have been distributed yet.
The Board of Aldermen will consider Curtatone's request in a meeting Thursday night at 7 p.m.
