This past week East Somerville Main Streets launched a free weekly event series to be held Tuesdays May through July. With the number of popular ethnic restaurants in the East Broadway Business District, East Somerville has become a popular evening destination for residents in Somerville and the Greater Boston area. The Tuesday events, which will all take place to Broadway, aim to create fun opportunities for residents and visitors to take a walk, grab a bite, or explore East Somerville. Events will include music, community art, demonstrations from local businesses, great food and drink and more.
Tuesday events in East Somerville are not new for the East Broadway Business District. A social event called “First Tuesdays” launched in 2009, and the popular Foodie Crawl event is also held on a Tuesday each year. Another event, “Two-for Tuesday” was held last year at participating restaurants.According to board member Renee Polcaro,“having visible, repeatable and predictable events in a neighborhood is important in establishing a sense of tradition. Tradition speaks to the genre of our neighborhood. We have families and friendships here despite how urban and densely populated it is. I got involved with ESMS primarily because I wanted to get to know my neighbors. I always imagined that I would see familiar faces when I arrived at these events. I feel that we have achieved this and continue to achieve this.”
Executive Director of East Somerville Main Streets, Carrie Dancyexplains the focus of the event as being all about “bringing attention to the great things happening in the East Broadway Business District and East Somerville. These events are just the beginning of something new for East Somerville that emerges when the community comes together. Our vision is the that the streets are filled with families every Tuesday. “
Building off of the success and the momentum of the Carnaval @ Somerstreets event, an annual event held on Broadway in East Somerville (more info below), May’s Tuesday evening events will focus mainly on prepping for the Carnaval. June’s events will transition to more general outdoor summer activities for all ages.
The first Tuesday, May 7, kicked off the series with a collaboration with El Sistema Somerville at East Somerville Community School and Maya Sol. There was a Workshop/ Concert with Boston String Quartet and El Sistema Somerville, and then an “After Party and Puposa Jam at Maya Sol.
The next event is on May 14th from 5-7pm.Game of Thrones!:Join East Somerville Main Streets and Shaddai Boutiqueat 97 Broadway (corner of Broadway and Indiana).
