Civil war threatens Somerville as opposing snow armies plan to occupy both Union and Davis Square this Saturday. Who among us will take up the call to arms as these two Somerville hot-spots battle for snow dominance?

Banditos Misteriosos, a group of Bostonians who put together free, family-friendly events, will be hosting Snowmandito at Seven Hills Park by Davis Square. Bandito T, the psuedonym of one of the group’s organizers, said they have been wanting to host this event for three years and are excited that the conditions are finally right. She said that the group hopes for a snow-building free-for-all.

“There’s no rules,” Bandito T said. “We just say, ‘Show up here and be prepared to make any kind of snowman that you like to do.”

Unknown to Banditos Misteriosos, however, a similar event is scheduled to take place in Union Square, unintentionally challenging the group of more experienced snow builders.

The Artisan’s Asylum, a nonprofit community craft group located in Somerville, is hosting Snow Day 2013. A Snow Day event in 2011 drew about 200 people in attendance, said Gui Cavalcanti, the organizer of Snow Day 2013, who said that this year’s event looks like it will easily be double the size.

He insisted that Snow Day posted their event first, and that the other group didn’t realize what they were up against.

“It will be a fun, lighthearted thing, but the Union Square group has a lot of members from the Asylum. There are people now building snowball launchers and other snow technology,” Cavalcanti said. “There are more of us and we are better prepared, so they better watch out.”

On both events’ Facebook pages, comments suggest an imminent battle. One user suggests bringing colored armbands to differentiate Union vs. Davis. Another user refers to Snowmandito attendees as the “Seven Hills Snow Militia.” Another user commented that Snowmandito may have the advantage since their event starts an hour earlier.

Regardless of the possible rivalry, Bandito T said the event is sure to be fun.

“I think that people should come because creating a snowman army is one of the coolest things I can possibly think of, and we have an excellent opportunity to do it tomorrow,” Bandito T said. “I’m just excited to hang out with everybody and make snowmen.”

Snowmandito, hosted by the Banditos Misteriosos, will begin on Saturday at noon at the Seven Hills Park near Davis Square. Snow Day, hosted by the Artisan’s Asylum, will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Union Square.
