Recently more than 70 locals gathered at Flatbread Company in Somerville to help kick-off som|dog’s first membership drive and fundraiser during Pizza & Pints for Pups. The charity event helped to raise more than $2,200 for the nonprofit, which works to promote responsible dog ownership and make the city of Somerville a better place to live for canines and their companions.
Since 2004, som|dog has helped to bring three dog parks to the city and advocate for off-leash recreation at surrounding DCR trails. The organization was built as a grassroots effort and is currently under the new leadership of Brian Davis.
Davis has served as the chairman and president of som|dog since November 1, 2012. He is a seven-year Somerville resident, who grew up volunteering his time at local animal shelters. After serving as a member of the nonprofit for the past three years, Davis was nominated for the role and will continue to grow and expand som|dog’s mission and reach within the community.
“We could not believe the amount of support that we received from our neighbors and local businesses to help us launch som|dog’s first event,” said Davis. “This fundraiser will be the first of many, with the goal of bringing together the likeminded canine community for education and training sessions, or to learn how we can all work together to create positive change. We hope to move the interaction of local dog owners beyond the dog park and create a network of support to give back to the community.” More than bark parks and mutt mitts, som|dog’s goal is to be the go-to resource for dog owners in the city of Somerville and the neighboring communities.
Davis has assembled a core group of volunteer advisors and leaders as well as a new board of directors to help propel the organization forward. They will work together to apply their skills, expertise and passion to the cause to continue to provide safe and legal off-leash recreational areas for Somerville’s residents and the neighboring community. som|dog will also stay on top of current news trends as they relate to dog ownership and effect city laws as well as host events to raise funds to support animal control, vaccine clinics, spay and neuter programs as well as dog park maintenance and renovations.
