Somerville's School Committee is looking to fill a vacant seat after one of its members resigned to join the City Council.
Ward 1 member Maureen Bastardi resigned last week to be appointed to Bill Roche's seat on the City Council. Roche announced his resignation Thursday. Bastardi was unanimously appointed to the seat by the council at Roche's request.
School Committee chairman Paul Bockelman announced during a meeting Monday that letters of interest from candidates, along with resumes or lists of qualifications, would be accepted until Jan. 10. Interviews of potential candidates are expected to be held later in January, and a new member will be appointed by Feb. 4, Bockelman said.
Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, who holds a seat on the School Committee, said he looked forward to the appointment process. Unlike Bastardi's appointment to the City Council, the candidates for the school board seat will likely have never held elected office, he said.
"We'll probably get to meet some exciting candidates," the mayor said.
