Congressman Mike Capuano and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone will be on hand for the groundbreaking of a new veterans center in Somerville this week.
The Massachusetts Bay Veterans Center, to be located at 1323 Broadway in Somerville, will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking at 10 a.m. Friday, according to an announcement from the Massachusetts chapter of Volunteers for America.
Previously a nursing facility, the 15,000 square-foot, three-story building on Broadway will provide 22 transitional housing units and seven permanent dwellings for homeless veterans, the announcement said. It is expected to open in the spring of 2013.
State Secretary of Veteran Services Coleman Nee and the Undersecretary for Department of Housing and Community Development Aaron Gornstein will also be on hand for the groundbreaking.
