It took 123 years, but Lyndell's Bakery of Somerville is finally on its way to global cookie domination.
Last July, the shop took over a bakery in Boston's North End; last month, owner Bill Galatis bought Carberry's Cambridge and Malden locations. After Galatis repaints the Prospect St. building in brown, black and gold, he's remodeling the original Ball Sq. location with an 1880s-era flair.
Along with Lyndell's signature half-moons (former New Yorkers might call them "black-and-white" cookies), Galatis pledged to keep on Carberry's greatest hits, particularly the artisan breads. Carberry's master baker will stay on for two years, he said. The Malden warehouse, which bakes both fresh and frozen pastries sold through
distributors, gets Lyndell's into the wholesale business.
And Galatis, who bought the Somerville shop 10 years ago, isn't done devouring Boston yet. He's keeping an eye on locations north and west of Boston. "I believe Lyndell's can become a leader in the nostalgic-comfort segment of the food industry," he said, and started reminiscing about his mom's Saturday visits to Lyndell's when he was a kid in East Somerville. "Fresh-baked goods is sort of a way to recapture the things that we all experienced when we grew up."
With the South End's Flour bakery also moving into Cambridge, sweet-toothed might want to stay on guard—lest these expanding businesses equal our expanding waistlines.
