Even after two years of production, a television show calling Scituate a great place to live is still generating excitement around town.
The program "Viewpoints with Terry Bradshaw," hosted by the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, discovered Scituate during a search of picturesque places in America that are a great hometowns, Town Administrator Patricia Vinchesi said.
At the time, producers asked if the town would be interested in filming a program there, a concept that was welcomed with open arms, Vinchesi said.
“The town contracted with this production company to do the program. We own it. They reached out to us,” she said. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to put the town in the national spotlight.”
The town soon procured funding to do the filming – approximately $19,200 – from Comcast’s cable access funds, and got to work developing the script.
“Most of the time had been in developing the script and who would be interviewed and what it was the town wanted to showcase and setting that up,” Vinchesi said. “It’s been going on for several months. It just culminated last week when [the production company] came.”
Filming took place on Sept. 18 and 19, and occurred around town – along Front Street for both interior and exterior shots of businesses and restaurants, up to North Scituate, the West End, and showcasing the train.
Shots included the area along Widow’s Walk, the wind turbine, several historical sites, and a variety of the town’s beaches.
“Schools, playgrounds, sporting events, it was pretty much all over town,” Vinchesi said.
Selectman Tony Vegnani and Selectmen Chairman Joseph Norton were interviewed for the program. Scituate Chamber of Commerce President Nico Afanasenko also participated.
“This is a great thing from my perspective as president of the chamber,” he said. “The Economic Development Commission is a fairly new organization…that has been pushing hard to make sure the town is focusing our dollars in a strategic way to make sure Scituate is a [prime] point on the map, to push tourism, commerce…here in town. When Tricia and the town came to me to discuss this, it was really exciting for me.”
Although being interviewed was nerve-wracking, Afanasenko said, the television show, which the town will own, will help bring more commerce to Scituate.
“It’s not only putting us on the national map…but when we talk about Scituate as a vacation destination, the growth we’re trying to go through with traveling, not only are we a jewel by the sea, but we’re accessible to the ocean, the city, the South Shore, the Cape, and those are things people don’t know enough,” he said. “I think it’s vastly going to help us attract new residents, new businesses to the town…but also to grow the current base of business we have.”
According to Vegnani, Scituate was one of three communities in Massachusetts chosen for the broadcast, which will air not only on Scituate’s local access television, but on the Discovery Channel and several other markets.
“I think it's great -- a good use of our money, and exactly what the Economic Development Committee was working on,” Vegnani said. “It’s a good opportunity that we took advantage of. It does not affect the taxpayer at all; it was used from cable funds approved by Comcast, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.”
Although filming has wrapped up, Vinchesi was unsure when the final product would be delivered.
“They take all the raw footage and it has to be edited. I still have been collecting still photos from all the departments that I need to forward them…and then they will put the whole thing together,” Vinchesi said. “Terry Bradshaw does the voiceover. So I don’t know. I would assume two-three months at most.”
With months of coordination and organization behind them, however, all the town has to do now is wait.
“The hard stuff is done now. Our piece is done,” Vinchesi said.
