Prior to last Thursday night's city council meeting, Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll swore in the city's four newest firefighters in front of family, friends and their firefighting brethren at City Hall, and promoted five-year veteran Richard Thomas to lieutenant.
Michael Buonfiglio, Matthew Keane, and Steve McCarthy took their official oaths Thursday having joined the department about a month ago. Jason Tarasuik was also sworn-in, and is expected to join the department on October 16.

Richard Thomas (left), accompanied by his father, Jon, a 29-year veteran of the department, takes the oath of lieutenant. His grandfather, William, was also firefighter in Salem for 30 years before retiring as a lieutenant.
