Tropical Foods project approved by BRA Board

A new residential and commercial development slated to fill the vacant city-owned lot along Melnea Cass Boulevard in Roxbury, dubbed Parcel 10, was recently approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Board.

The phased project, once completed, will mean a new home for Tropical Foods, ground floor retail space, 173 parking spaces, office space, and 30 residential units.

The first phase of the $44-million project, a partnership between Tropical Foods and the Madison Park Development Corporation, will build a new space on the corner of Shawmut Avenue and Melnea Cass for Tropical Foods, which is currently located at 2101 Washington St.

Once the new location has been constructed, a five-story building will be built adjacent to it on the corner of Melnea Cass and Washington Street. The new building will house an estimated 14,600-square-feet of retail and office space.

The final phase of the project will rehab Tropical Foods’ existing space on Washington Street and convert it into 30 resident units with space available for ground floor retail. Twelve of the new units will be deemed affordable.

The BRA estimates the project will create 250 jobs.

The project on the city-owned parcel was awarded to the development team after a public process that included a number of submissions, the Boston Globe reported.
