Students from the Mission Hill Pilot School recently returned from a debate competition champions.
The 12 students competed against other area middle school students for the title at a competition sponsored by Debate Mate. It was held at Harvard University.
The students, who come from Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Fenway, Dorchester, Allston/Brighton, and East Boston, debated a number of topics. including gun control, sagging pants, and nuclear weapons.
Divided up into three teams, the pilot school’s students won seven of the nine preliminary debates. In the championships, they competed against Brighton’s Edison School.
The team of fifth-eighth grade students, which formed in February, are coached by Sarah Pizzano and mentored by Ann Ruggiero.
This was the team’s first win and the students are eager to defend their title next year, the school said.
The Mission Hill Pilot School, founded in 1997, serves approximately 220 K0-eighth grade students at its Jamaica Plain campus.
