Painters, sculptures and other artists in Roxbury will be throwing open their doors this weekend for the 14th Annual Roxbury Open Studios.
The yearly event gives neighborhood artists a chance to display their creative works and gives connoisseurs an opportunity to see all the art coming out of the Boston neighborhood.
“Many of the artists [in Roxbury] don’t have the avenues of exposures, like Newbury Street, for their art,” said Laura Palmer Edwards, media manager for Discover Roxbury, the group overseeing the event. “There’s a diverse and broad community here and every community deserves an open studios.”
The four-day event that kicks-off Oct. 4 will feature nearly 70 artists, from new media designers to traditional painters.
“We’re working to generate an economic engine in this community and we found art is a way to do that,” said Edwards. “Just because it’s not part of the ‘art scene’ in Boston doesn’t mean there aren’t wonderful artists here. We all have something to share and opportunity to do that is important.”
In addition to the artists, the event for the first time will feature food trucks, allowing visitors to take a tour of the neighborhood and stop off for a quick bite on the trail.
The schedule on Oct. 4 features a discussion with area artists. Oct. 5 will be the official opening of the event. The tours will begin Oct. 6 and run until Oct. 7.
