The Boston Natural Areas Network, a Boston-based open space advocacy group, will now manage 16 community gardens in Lower Roxbury and the South End after the city transferred control of the gardens to the organization.
A portion of the 3.8-acres of gardens and parks absorbed by the agency were controlled by the Boston Redevelopment Authorityy and with the transfer will now be protected from future development, said a release from BNAN.
In addition to the gardens, the South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust, which managed a number of the neighborhoods’ gardens, has merged with BNAN.
“The Land Trust members thought BNAN was the perfect choice to take over the gardens,” Betsy Johnson, former president of the land trust, said in a statement. “BNAN already owned 43 community gardens; they’re very experienced in garden infrastructure, programming and education.”
Some of the transferred gardens include the Berkeley Street Community Garden, home to 160 gardeners and the Lenox-Kendall Community Garden along Tremont Street, one of the city’s oldest.
“Our staff and volunteers are excited to be working in the remarkably diverse South End and Lower Roxbury neighborhoods. With the varied cultures, races, ages, income and languages, we look forward to working together,” Valerie Burns, president of BNAN, said in a statement. “With the Mayor’s help and the devotion of local gardeners a community garden network was created in the midst of significant development growth in the South End and Lower Roxbury. Their collective effort has now been rewarded with permanent protection.”
