Heavy winds and driving rains hit the Peabody area this morning knocking down five or six utility poles on a portion of Route 114, a spokesperson from the Peabody Municipal Light Plant said.
The damage caused a power outage for about 900 customers and there were wires down on the ground. By 4:30 p.m. all but 23 customers were back on line, power plant officials said.
The downed poles and resulting wires in the street meant police had to re-route traffic around the scene in the area of Andover and Mt. Pleasant streets.
Power plant officials say they cannot estimate the amount of time it will take to fully restore power and fix the damage. The light plant staff was planning to call businesses in the area to provide them with updates on the situation.
