Newton Public Schools and the Education Center will be closed Friday and a snow emergency will go into effect for the city at 8 p.m. Thursday as the first Nor’easter of the season barrels down on the region.

There will be no late buses running from Newton Public Schools and all after-school activities, evening events, community education programs, and athletic events for Friday are canceled, according to the school system’s website. Elementary schools will remain open for After-Care.

According to the Newton Police Department, there will be no street parking allowed during the snow emergency and violators will be ticketed and towed for interfering with snow removal.

The police department has also issued an advisory that states people who do not remove snow and ice from business districts or who put snow and ice onto streets, sidewalks or bridges can be fined.

Trash and recycling collection is scheduled to take place as planned Friday with a one-day delay due to the holiday on Wednesday, according to the mayor's office.

Any changes to trash and recycling collection will be posted on, as will the notification of the end of the snow emergency.

Residents are required to clear their sidewalks within 30 hours of the end of a storm. If you are physically or financially unable to do so, you may qualify for the Snow Exemption Program. For information on the program, contact the Department of Senior Services at (617) 796-1660.

If you do not qualify for the Snow Exemption Program, you can call the city's Customer Service department at (617) 796-1000 for a list of volunteers, contractors and paid shovelers. The list can also be found online at

The mayor's office encourages residents to check on elderly neighbors or friends who may need assistance and to make sure snow does not block dryer and heating vents.
