The Newton middle school math teacher arrested last week on child pornography charges resigned this morning, according to Superintendent David Fleishman.
“He is no longer an employee of Newton Public Schools,” said Fleishman.
Steven Chan, 57, who pleaded not guilty in Newton District Court Aug. 30, is accused of downloading thousands of explicit images, some of girls as young as four years old, onto his home computers. A 23-year school employee, he was the high school gymnastics coach at Newton North in addition to teaching at F.A. Day Middle School.
According to prosecutors, there is no indication that any images contained children from Newton.
Chan was on paid administrative leave, and was due to be terminated at a meeting next week, according to school officials, before he resigned.
Chan’s salary for the coming school year is $84,113, according to Heather Richards, the district’s human resources director. He started as a teacher at Day in 1990, and then taught for a few years at Bigelow Middle School before returning to the school permanently in 1996, she said. He also spent a year as a substitute teacher in 1989-90 at different Newton schools.
