The Local in Newton is coming soon to Wellesley and Wayland – and according to owner Frank Santo, it could be the beginning of a much larger expansion.
“We feel that every neighborhood should have a Local,” he said. “We’re looking at neighborhoods on a monthly basis.”
The gastropub, which opened in West Newton in November of 2008, offers “approachable” bar food and pub food, with a relaxed atmosphere and local ingredients.
“It just seems like a concept that the public enjoys,” said Santo. “Local produce, local beer, local burgers.”
Rumors have been swirling that The Local could be opening up shop in new locations, the move wasn’t announced until this past weekend. In Wellesley, The Local will take the place of the old China Sky, whose owner retired, said Santo. In Wayland, it will open in a new location in the Town Center Development.
The new Locals will have slightly expanded menus, said Santo, because they will have larger kitchens. Santo is hoping that the Wayland location opens on June 1; Wellesley’s opening date is a bit further behind, tentatively scheduled for this winter.
Santo said that Wellesley and Wayland will be the only new locations to open this year, but that they are taking calls from developers and looking at new properties. He’s hoping to open one north of Boston in the near future.
“We hope to open them as long as we can execute them and keep them up to our standards,” he said. “As long as we can do that, we’ll keep opening them.”
