Newton City Hall will be in the spotlight next week when ABC begins filming scenes for an upcoming TV movie titled "The Makeover," starring Julia Stiles.
Crews will begin setting up on Monday, Oct. 8, and filming throughout the day on Tuesday, said Aaron Goldman, the citizens assistance officer.
Scenes will be filmed inside the War Memorial, at the Inspectional Services counter, and inside the main rotunda. The crew will also be at City Hall on Wednesday, cleaning up and taking down sets and equipment.
Newton residents are no strangers to the cameras: John Krasinski, Matt LeBlanc, Louis C.K., Jack Lemmon, and many other actors hail from the city of 13 villages.
"The Makeover" is a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie that will air on ABC next year. Based on George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion," the so-called love story features Stiles as a Harvard-educated professor who recruits a Southie guy (played by David Walton) to run for Congress. Stiles's business partner is played by Camryn Manheim, formerly of "The Practice," according to a press release for the movie.
Goldman said the filming at Newton City Hall will be very visible throughout all three days, particularly on Tuesday, with a significant amount of trucks and equipment outside the building, as well as a catering tent for approximately 150 cast and crew members.
No streets will be closed, but there will be some parking restrictions around City Hall during those three days. Sections of Homer Street, Commonwealth Avenue, and Walnut Street will be affected, Goldman said.
On Tuesday, the War Memorial Circle, the circular driveway behind City Hall used primarily by employees, will be closed, though Goldman said that should not impact visitors. Those coming to City Hall through the front entrance around 5 p.m. or later on the filming days will be redirected to the side entrance, as the production team will be filming a scene.
"We're excited to have this filming take place in Newton and at city hall," Mayor Setti Warren said. "It's great for our city and certainly for our local businesses and we get a chance to highlight what Newton has to offer."
And will he try to get on camera?
"Maybe they'll catch me at work 'cause I'll be at City Hall," he laughed.
