Newton Police are warning residents, especially in Cabot Park Village, to beware of a caller claiming to be with the Social Security Administration and asking for personal information over the telephone.
The police have received about half dozen complaints in recent days about the possible telephone scam, said Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a spokesman for the Newton Police Department.
The caller, who identifies himself as Tim Mcrea, warns residents that a fire has destroyed their personal information and that their social security checks could be delayed. He then provides a 301-area code phone number that residents can call, Apotheker said.
When police recently called, they received a recording, he said.
Residents are advised against giving out personal information over the phone and to contact the police if they receive any suspicious calls, Apotheker said.
