The Newton teacher who was arrested last month on child pornography charges resigned late Tuesday, Schools Superintendent David Fleishman said.
David Ettlinger, who taught second grade at Underwood Elementary School, turned in his letter of resignation the day before a scheduled hearing on his termination.
Ettlinger has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor and filming it, and possession of child pornography. Federal investigators have also accused him of participating in an online site that encouraged members to produce and distribute child pornography.
He remains in jail.
Newton school officials put Ettlinger on leave immediately after his arrest and began termination proceedings against him soon after. He was scheduled to have a hearing before the superintendent today.
Fleishman said the school district will notify the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education about the resignation. State officials will review the details of the case and determine whether to take Ettlinger’s teaching license away, Fleishman said.
The school system has hired a long-term substitute teacher from Angier Elementary School to take over Ettlinger's second-grade classroom, Fleishman said.
