Women with upcoming mammograms at Newton-Wellesley Hospital will be asked to participate in a program to increase cancer awareness, according to an announcement by the hospital.
The Pink Card program, which will be open to all mammogram patients throughout October, distributes pink cards reminding holders of the importance of early detection for breast cancer.
“Our goal is to increase awareness about the importance of early detection as the first step in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dr. Alan Semine, chief of breast imaging at the hospital.
Patients who are given the cards are asked to ‘‘pay them forward,’’ delivering them to a friend or relative as a reminder to schedule a mammogram.
The hospital has other events scheduled to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including a free forum and wine tasting. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 200,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed last year.
