The longtime head of the Newton Teachers Association has been ousted in a narrow vote announced late Thursday.
Cheryl Turgel lost to Michael Zilles, 49-percent to 51-percent, according to an email sent to teachers union members.
"Michael Zilles is the declared winner and his term of office begins July 1, 2010,'' the email said.
In a statement, Turgel wished Zilles well.
"It's been my extreme honor and privilege to have served the members of the Newton Teachers Association over the last 8 years,'' Turgel said in a statement to Boston.com/newton Thursday night. "I deeply appreciate all the efforts and support of my Executive Committee, the Building Reps, and the NTA staff members, who have all contributed to the progress of the Association. I am proud of what we have accomplished under my leadership. I value the excellent working relationships that I have established during my tenure with the School Administration and members of the Newton School Committee.''
"I wish Mr. Zilles luck as he takes over the presidency of the NTA.''
The Executive Committee of the Newton Teachers Association (NTA) has certified the following election results for President of the NTA:
Cheryl Turgel 49%
Michael Zilles 51%
