As director of the annual Newton Open Studios event, Ellen Fisher knows first-hand about the varied talents of the hundreds of artists living in the city. Area residents will have the opportunity to refresh their own appreciation this week.
About 160 artists and craftspeople will display and sell their work in 52 studios, homes, and community spaces throughout Newton from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday. A wine and dessert preview reception will take place on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St.
According to Fisher, the participants range from established artists and instructors to emerging newcomers. Offerings will include paintings, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, and photography.
"Because this event is so informal, it can be a great introduction to art," said Fisher, who will be exhibiting her close-up photographs of flowers, pine cones, and leaves. "It's nice for artists to get to talk to visitors and see their reactions, instead of just putting their work up in a gallery. Plus, you're supporting your local artists just by showing up."
