Needham High senior quarterback Drew Burnett broke his ankle during last week’s 49-14 win over visiting Milton, and will miss the remainder of the season for the 5-1 Rockets.
The Needham-Milton game was played over two days — it was stopped during the second quarter on Friday night because of rain and resumed on Saturday afternoon. With Needham leading 28-0 before play was stopped, coach David Duffy said he wrestled with the option of whether to play Burnett when the game picked up on Saturday.
"I thought about it a lot, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since," Duffy said. "Drew wanted to be out there ... but the decision is my fault. Anything can happen out there."
Burnett is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow at Children’s Hospital Boston, Duffy said. The senior cocaptain is expected to make a full recovery, and be able to play college football. He has been recruited by several local programs.
The Rockets have three quarterbacks in reserve: sophomore Ryan Charters, junior Matt McGloin, and senior Dan Pierce.
"We’re not going to change our offense," Duffy said. "We have a real good team, real good senior leadership. Hopefully someone else will step up."
