Fanton said she lost 10 percent of her annual sales during the Chapel Street sidewalk construction, a project that local businesses had spoken out against because of the disruption it would cause during the holiday shopping season. After taking the hit and expecting even more losses during the upcoming Town Hall renovation project, she said closing up seemed like the best option.
"We were faced with our loss in the month of November, and looking out to possible more losses because they were going to start this other project, it was just very daunting," she said.
After announcing that the store would be going out of business in January, Fanton said the Needham community came together to show support and asked her to stay. At the same time, she closed her Edgartown location and received what she described as "hopeful financial news," which allowed her to continue to afford the space.
"We're rolling the dice," Fanton said, "and taking the gamble that the support the customers showed us is going to come through as we weather this horrible construction project."
