Natick town officials say they are saddened by Boston Scientific Corp.'s announcement today that the company will leave Natick and reestablish its headquarters in Marlborough by 2014. But they are excited about the prospect of another major local company taking over the Boston Scientific property.

"We do understand the complexity of business decisions, but we certainly are sorry to see them go," said Natick Town Administrator Martha White. ]However, White said that MathWorks, Inc., another Natick-based corporation, is planning
to purchase the Natick Boston Scientific property to expand MathWorks operations.

A MathWorks representative said the company is in the final stages of buying the property.

"We’re hopeful that the efforts of MathWorks to further expand will be successful, so that those buildings will be occupied by another great citizen," White said.

Boston Scientific has occupied its 500,000 square-foot property located just off Speen Street since 1995, and now employs about 800 people. But, the corporation announced today that it plans to move operations to Marlborough in a multi-phase plan, starting in spring 2013 and ending by mid-2014.

The company bought the Marlborough site in 2004, and expects to complete an additional building there in time for the employees to move over in mid-2014.

Jeanne O'Keefe, senior vice president and CFO of MathWorks, said today that the company "is pleased at the prospect of expanding into such a renowned property, with such a rich local history and situated so close to our current campus."

MathWorks has been aggressively hiring for new positions in Natick, looking to fill 165 jobs in October as the company grows its operations. Tim Evans, the company's recruiting manager, said the company is growing at a rapid pace as its tools, popular engineering software like MATLAB and Simulink, are used in an increasing number of devices.

MathWorks currently employs about 1,700 people at its Natick headquarters just off Route 9.
