Selectmen delayed a decision on whether to provide the Fire Department with $63,000 to cover overtime, after Denis Keohane expressed reservations.
“I have a big problem with the fact that we have 59 firefighters and we can’t get 11 firefighters to show up when they are supposed to show up and go home when they are supposed to go home,” Keohane said at a meeting Thursday.
Keohane said it was important for all departments to get personnel budgets in order.
“I’m going to take a firm stance on overtime from here going forward,” Keohane said.
Fire Chief John J. Grant was not present at Thursday’s meeting and did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.
Selectmen agreed to put off the decision until Chief Grant could come in to discuss the reasons behind the overtime. They will invite Grant to their meeting on April 4.
